Classic FM targets broadband users

GWR's classical music video channel Classic FM TV has been rolled out to be available for broadband internet users.

The channel, which has already 2.4 million cable and satellite viewers, will now be streamed 24-hours a day to broadband internet users via classicfm.com.

Julian Rigamonti, head of Classic FM TV, said: “The streaming service enables us to extend the channel’s potential reach to 2.5 million broadcast homes and continue to engage new audiences with classical music.”

Classic FM is the first broadcaster to stream its channel online as a way of advertising and generating revenue.

The service is provided by Global-MIX and is sponsored by Volkswagen’s luxury car, the Phaeton, by arrangement with Tribal DDB and Opus New Media agencies.

Information TV begins webcasting

Information TV has launched a broadband TV simulcast of its Sky Digital-delivered service. The webcast has been launched using technology supplied by Global-MIX. The company has been able to counter traditional problems experienced by webcasters, such as difficulties with scalability, as multiple viewers seek to watch simultaneously. The system will also enable the channel to reach one of its core markets, the corporate and public sector, which will often block access to webcasting because of the potential impact on the local network. Traditionally each new viewer takes up capacity within the ISP’s network. The Global-MIX system translates the content into a multicast format, delivering it directly to each ISP.
